<Semifinal in Rome, Italian Open>

   Last year Simona Halep reached the final in Rome but lost to Elina Svitolina. Her current No position can be maintained if she defends as many of the points as she can. With Caroline Wozniacki, ranked No 2, leaving the competition in the quarter-Simona is able to maintain her position, but a title in Rome would be a great achievement and would consolidate her leadership in the WTA rankings. For now, she is going to maintain the No 1 position untill at least the start of French Open (Roland Garros). This means Simona is also seeded first for the French tournament.

   Halep beat Caroline Garcia in two sets. She did not have to work too much for the victory as Garcia commited error after error. Meanwhile, Sharapova comes after a not so easy win over Jelena Osptapenko in the quarter-finals, so she would be theoreticaly more exhausted. Halep did not play the match in the Round of 15 because her opponent Madison Keys has retired. It will be an interesting match to watch, definitely.

   Simona talked about the semifinal against Sharapova, saying she is expecting a very difficult game and that she has only one thing in mind: to play a good match. "I look forward for a difficult match, of course. It was always difficult against Sharapova, but I know I have a chance, and if I do my game it will be fine. I will try to do everything on court in order to win, but I do not have other expectations. I will enter the court and give my best. This is what I want.

   She also mentioned she is not thinking about statistics, which favor the Russian with 7 wins to 1 loss. "I feel this match is open, anyone can win. I do not thing about the past confrontations."

Ostapenko, Muguruza, Wozniacki, and Halep (front)

The tournament at Indian Wells enters its second week and some of the well-known names of women's tennis are already out of the game,after they were defeated by lower classed players. Let's take a look at them!

First RoundNaomi Osaka - Maria Sharapova 6-4 6-4

Sharapova does not seem to improve her game and reach a better shape  after returning from the 15 month meldonium suspension. She was eliminated by Japanese Naomi Osaka, no.44 in the rankings. Sharapova is currently no.41.

<Naomi Osaka, Japan, No 44>

<Maria Sharapova, Russia, No 41>

Second RoundGarbine Muguruza - Sachia Vickery 6-2 5-7 1-6

World No 3 and the last year Wimbledon Champion, Garbine Muguruza started the match strong, and was leading the second set with 3-0. Vickery's sudden improvement of the game let Muguruza with no answer, and here she is leaving the competition too early. This may cost her a lot of points in the general rankings.

<Sachia Vickery, USA, No 100>

<Garbine Muguruza, Spain, No 3>

Third RoundPetra Martic - Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 6-3

Last year's French Open champion and the winner of Seoul Open is not able to  confirm what she showed last year, losing matches in the early stages of this season's competitions. Fans are still waiting her to return to the shape that brought  her the Roland Garros trophy.

<Jelena Ostapenko, Latvia, No 6>

<Petra Martic, Croatia, No 58>

Third RoundPetra Kvitova - Amanda Anisimova 2-6 4-6

Former Wimbledon champion (2011, 2014), Petra Kvitova started this year winning two important trophies, St Petersburg and Doha Open, thus reaching the 9th position in the WTA rankings. She looked like the most successfull player of 2018 so far, but world No 149 Anisimova was better.

<Amanda Anisimova, USA, No 149>

<Petra Kvitova, Czech Republic, No 9>

Third Round: Venus Williams - Serena Williams 6-3 6-4

It was Serena's first WTA tournament after more than one year of a break. Everybody was expecting her comeback, but she had to play with Venus, who knows her game better than anyone. It was not Serena's day.

<Serena defeated by world no 8, Venus>

Third Round: Carla Suarez Navarro - Elina Svitolina 7-5 6-3

World No 4 Elina Svitolina was coming after winning the Dubai Open, but this time Suarez Navarro played better and stopped Svitolina from earning points in her race to WTA Top 3.

<Carla Suarez Navarro, Spain, No 32>

<Elina Svitolina, Ukraine, No 4>

Top 10 Rankings

Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki are in contention for the WTA No. 1 singles ranking at the completion of the third round. In order for Wozniacki to regain the top ranking, she must win the title by defeating  a player other than Halep in the final.

안녕 folks!

Simona Halep's way to her first WTA number 1 ranking was halted several times in the months before China Open (30 Sept- 8 Oct, 2017). The Roland Garros final loss to Jelena Ostapenko and the elimination from US Open by Maria Sharapova in the first round, were not easy to deal with psychologically.

In an interview for a Romanian TV channel she stated the Roland Garros final haunted her dreams for days after the game. Aggressive player Ostapenko is not an easy opponent these days in the WTA tournaments.

On the other side, Halep lost all her previous games to Sharapova, seven in number, a situation that led some to say she had developed a Sharapova complex. However, Halep denied such a thing, still admitting that it was one of her biggest wishes to beat the Russian.

<Previous meetings, before Beijing 2017>

     China Open will remain a tournament to remember for Simona Halep.

<Petra Kvitova, Caroline Garcia, Jelena Ostapenko, Simona Halep>

She obtained her first victory in two sets against the 'unbeatable Russian': 6-2, 6-2.

She took revenge for the Roland Garros final, becoming WTA No 1, after the semifinal against Ostapenko: 6-2, 6-4.

Yet Simona is getting a lot of criticism from fans all over the world who say that a No 1 without a Grand Slam is not a real No 1. Regarding this, only time will tell the truth.
